Jonathan Leger has started a case study related to ONLY using links from blog comments on a completely new website to see what impact it has on search engine rankings. I was going to do this myself for you guys but heck, if Jon is doing it you might as well follow along with that. You’ll find it here.
Also, if you’re not sure about the “no-follow” issue, check out the second comment made…
“I can tell you from experience that it helps - and although you are ruling out the blogs that have nofollow on the comments - that more affects PR than anything else. If google finds a link to something that is flagged as “nofollow” - they have been known to still follow it and see what it was. It just means that they are not counting the vote for PR reasons.”
…there’s your answer. “No Follow” will help your rankings and link popularity but it’s not likely to do much for your Page Rank values. This has been shown to me time and time again. Anyone that tells you otherwise isn’t using the technique.
Best…

already spotted Jon’s post earlier, he does good case studies, so looking forward to seeing his results, although I’ve seen some traffic from posts on good blogs even if there’s a “nofollow” tag, you just need to make an interesting and relevant post.
Loving Blog Comment Sniper by the way, real nice bit of kit!

Hey Duncan,
I just put a link to your Comment Sniper on my blog, because Jack Humphrey mentioned it (well, he raved about it,) in an interview I did with him yesterday on Kick Butt Radio http://rickbutts.com/guests/jack-humphrey/
Please tell me if you would like anything else there and I’ll take care of it!
Thanks and good job with this terrific software!

Hi Duncan,
Thank you for sharing this valuable info.
I heard about this nofollow tag issue earlier, but now only I understand that even “nofollow” links are helpful in SEO.

I have been monitoring Jons work for about 2 years and he has been spot on with his link strategies. And I am using Comment Sniper and got an alert to this post, so I have to admit this is a test and my comments.
